Ceramic tile Pinwheel pattern with mosaic tile?

I would like to do a pinwheel pattern using Roca tile (8.7 mm thick) and Roca Mosaic (9.8 mm). Do you believe I can make up the difference with mortar thickness?

Can you give us a link to the tile? We are flying in fog and can't see what you see. I don't do metric, but it seems a millimeter is very small, so you could make up the difference with your thinset if you are accurate.

Care to ID both tiles and give us their sizes? Are the edges of both the same contour or is one more square edged? Is the larger tile regular ceramic or porcelain? Standard or rectified?

For the metrically challenged (Larry), that's a grand total of.... .043 inches, 43/1000ths, 21.5/500ths, 10.75/250ths, 5.375/125ths. That's as far as I can do w/o burning out a neuron.

It seems the thinner tile will be easily leveled by buttering the back a little.

In decimal equivalent, 1/32" = .03125
3/64" = .046875

I'm not going to start panicking

Thanks, Vic and Brian. I had a mechanical engineer who would send me CAD drawings to look over to see if they would work. His realm dealt in 10/1000ths of an inch. I told him 1/32" was as far as I would go, so I had him convert them. You would think the world was ending.

We'll wait on the link.

I just realized, the difference in thickness is less than the spark plug gap on my car.

13" Roca Carrera Blanco, 2" Roca linen mosaic. The Carrera edges are more rounded. The mosaic edges are very square. Porcelain. I know nothing of rectified. http://rocatilegroup.com/products/carrara-hd/

Hi Maureen,

Roca's website may not be up to date, but the info does not jive with what you're telling us. The only 13" tile they show is 8.0 mm as is their 2x2. Both are porcelain and the 13" is as you describe, not rectified.

The tiles that are 8.7mm thick are not porcelain, but regular ceramic. They are spec'd as wall tiles but the only square tile is 17" and all are rectified. Your 13" does not seem to be rectified.

S0 sounds like you have the Carrara HD 13" porcelain un rectified and the 2x2 mosaic, both are listed as 8.0mm thick.

Wow, Jaz. Now I'm really confused. Got out the calipers, and clearly neither are 8 mm. The box is labeled United States Ceramic, which Roca bought out. So I think I just need to verify that these are floor tiles, as sold, before I push on. Time to email Roca.

Floor tiles? .....of course they're floor tiles. The 13" only come in porcelain and the mosaics are all porcelain.

The question is how thick are they. Their figures do not jive with yours. Where did you find your figures?

It might actually be good if the mosaics were a bit thicker cuz you'll want to apply that thinset a little thinner than for the larger tiles. How's doing the install?

Thanks, Jaz. I'm good. The thicknesses are absolutely different, and absolutely not 8 mm, but as you say, just changing mortar thickness is adjusting them well. I'm moving on! Thanks for the help. (And the Roca website needs a LOT of work!). It's going very, very slowly, as I'm sure you could have predicted. By the time I'm done, I may even be good at it!

I hope you're not doing 10 tiles a night like some do.

Yes! It's become a long term goal! And I'm finding out the hard way that mistakes are much, much harder to fix this way! Just dug up 4 tiles yesterday, and found two more I'm unhappy with this morning. Good thing I have extra tiles and DITRA! Lots of lessons learned to be posted at the end of the job.

You need to work on it for 6,8,10 hours at a time. If you've only got 1,or 2 days a week, then that's it. Once you get to the point where you can make progress by working a few hours in the evening, that's fine too.
