USG Easy Sand 90 Joint Compound over mastic?
There was a similar thread in 2015, but my question is a little different.
We've removed old pink tiles in our bathroom, and below the tile is what I now believe to be mastic. It is a thick coat, and shiny, but there are some crevices.
The location is in the bathroom, above the shower surround, and I imagine the rest of the bathroom too.
We want to paint, and replacing the wall is not an option. Can I use USG 90 joint compound over the glue/mastic? Will it adhere to the shiny surface, or should I scuff/sand first?
Thank you,
Charlene

Welcome to the forums Charlene!
It's almost always a good idea to sand first! If you can post a pic or two we'd have a better idea of what you are dealing with - http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html

Ideally the mastic or thinset would be removed and then the wall repaired as needed. You might try tapping a corner of it with a hammer to see if it will break loose. EasySand should bond ok to what is there although I would scuff it with some 80 grit sandpaper first.

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to skim coat the adhesive with compound for a surface suitable for painting, there isn't anything for the compound to stick too.
I'm sure you did not want to hear but the adhesive needs to come off.
