terrazzo flooring redo
#1
What can I do to change the color of my terrazzo floor so that it blends with the Mexican tiles in the rest of the house? Flooring is in excellent condition, it's thinset over 4" of concrete slab; it's just not the right choice for my mediterranean house. Can we safely cover it with tile or wood? Am seeking an alternative to demolishing the floor, which covers about 1200 sf. A technique which would create more of a solid color would help - it's emerald green chips in grey grout with aluminum grids (18").

You may not realize that you have $20,000 + of terrazzo you want to cover(today's prices) You can lay tile over it(yikes!) and I guess in the future if you wanted the terrrazzo back, you could remove the tile and re-grind the terrazzo..but as a terrazzo guy, I would suggest a few strategically placed area rugs.

Yes, I'm aware of its value, but it's a total departure from the rest of the house, which has historic value sans the addition. I thought of area rugs, too, but want to explore all other options as well. What about removing strategic areas of the terrazzo and replacing with decorative tiles to match the rest of the house? Thanks for your prompt reply!

Glad you mentioned that..I have replaced certain indivdual panels of terrazo with ceramic tile...it's a bit of work to remove the terrazzo without damaging the surrounding panels and even more difficult not to damage the zinc divider strips...but it can be done. You have to saw cut(with a diamond concrete blade), all around each panel you want to remove and then chip out the terrazzo. I'm not sure if your terrazzo is on grad slab, or is on a mortar bed(probably) but you'll have some floor repair after you remove it. Hopefully this isn't a DIY, since this is a job for someone with a lot of experience. If there is a tile and terrazzo contractor in your area, it may be wise to call them.
