Tile backing weird?

Hello,
Picked up some glass tile from Home Depot for my shower. The back of the tile has a loose plastic glue sheet on the back. Is this some kind of protective cover that needs to be removed before tiling? See pics

The big box home centers are now selling adhesive backed peel and stick tile. If you peel off the backing is it sticky?

No it is not sticky. It peels off and breaks into pieces like a thin sheet of plastic. Really weird. I'll get another pic tonight of it peeling back.

It could be the backing to provide a uniform backdrop for the glass tile.

Dag namit, forgot to get a better picture. It has a white background under the stuff. And the stuff is just flaking and peeling off. I'll see if i can get a better picture of it tonight.

Ok here are some close ups of the plastic stuff on the back it breaks off easily but not like it was meant to peel off. It is not water soluble.

So, asking the obvious, did you call the store or manufacturer and inquire as to what to do?

I would not use that stuff. Almost looks like it was already used on wall and taken off. It could be a protective backing that just got so old it no longer peels off. Defiantly defective. Was this title on sale or clearance.
Those ridges as shown in the second pic, is what the whole surface should look like. You apply thinset to that and it grips the tile.

The home depot staff werent really sure what to do. A new shipment of the tile came in and it is the same way. Guess i should try and contact the manufacturer.
