Is it ok to thinset and tape shower wall cement board to tub lip gap?

Mixed info on this. We plan on placing hardibacker board for shower walls above existing tub. Will be about 1/8 to 1/4 gap above tub lip.

Will thinset and taping it work and then redgarding everything for our waterproofing.

There is no current vapor barrier or poly sheet.

It really is not necessary unless your wall tiles are small mosaics. Regular sized tiles will easily bridge the gap to the tub deck and you finish with a bead of caulk. If you feel better filling in the gap, make sure you use a cement backer mesh tape along with your thinset. Understand that the thinset will sag on you so it may cause more issues than it fixes.

I do not attach the backer to tubs. Like Czizzi mentioned I leave it slightly short then let the tile bridge a small distance if needed. Then the gap between tile and tub is caulked. If your tub was designed to have a shower surround it should have a lip up behind the surround to contain any water. If your tub is a freestanding model without a lip there will always be the potential for leaks.
