Ceramic tile countertops?

I am considering installing ceramic tile countertops in my kitchen. Presently, I have smooth formica (flat finish), and the condition of the formica surface and the wood (pressboard or plywood) underneath is very good.

1) Can I install the tile directly on the formica (maybe after sanding it a bit)?

2) Is there a grout for countertops that resists staining from spills and food (maybe containing polymer or fiberglass resin)?

You would be better off putting down 1/4 ceramic tile backer board first. As far as grout is concerned, there are epoxy grouts that are stain proof, but you need an experienced installer to apply it...you may want to get help with that part. It's not really a dIY...though some beginners have tried it, and did ok.

Removing Tiles from cement

I have a ceramic tile floor that is in good shape (i.e still well bonded to the subfloor) and is laid on a cement slab. I want to replace the tile because their look is dated. I think they were orginally bonded with thin set morter. What is the easiest way to remove them from the subfloor and prepare the subfloor for new tile. I would imagine the tiles will break in pieces as I try to remove them and I will be left with a rough subfloor afterwards. Tiling over the current tile is not an option. thanks in advance.Read More

levelling floor for tiling

i have hard vinyl tile over older ceramic tile over a cement slab in the bathroom. (when we bought the house, there was carpet over that!). i intend to lay small (1") hexagonal ceramic tile over this collage, but first need advice on levelling the floor. there are several spots at the edges where the vinyl tile has chipped away down to the older tile or all the way to the cement slab. most are less than 1/4" deep, though there are two gaping holes (maybe 2" in diameter) around pipes behind the toilet, where I can wave to someone downstairs in the kitchen. first I plan to reinforce underneath the holes from the ceiling below, with wood. someone suggested a wire mess above this. after that, do i fill in with concrete, and how long will it have to cure before laying tile? i read about "self-levelling" compounds on the forum. are these only used for small gaps? thanx, leann Read More
