kitchen backsplash
I have torn the old backsplash off and in a lot of places the drywall paper peeled as well, not all the way to where there is no paper left though. Do I have to skim coat it before installing the mosaic tile sheets? Also, will I get a better result from thin set or the glue sheets like "smart mat"?
Thank you for any help!

I wouldn't think you'd have to do a skim coat but I'd highly recommend using the thin set installation. I'm not a fan of self sticking products especially in that application.
The pro's will be by later.

I was thinking maybe a product like Gardz® Problem Surface Sealer and then thin set would be fine but wanted to ask before I make a big mistake.

I'm not the tile pro so I was just replying to what I would do.
Hang tight for comments on the surface sealer.

If your talking just minor paper and even some minor missing drywall you can simply mortar over that with no issues.
I also agree, mortar base is tried and true, a lot of thoes new products are to appease folks who think doing it the right way is difficult but they come with a price that they do not perform as well!

I'm not a tile pro either but I would recommend a coat of Gardz be applied first. That should allow the thinset to bond better to the wall with no worries of the moisture in the thinset affecting the exposed gypsum.
