Wet room waterproofing

When making wet room, is there there any need to put something like membrane under the tile so that if any water leaks get through the grout in future years that it is contained and doesn't damage the plywood or wood underneath?
if not, what is the correct way to waterproof it?

Let's start with what's a wet room? Is it just a room with water like a bathroom or something different?

Floor drain, tile, no shower base:
A new term I have not heard, guess it goes along with the "open floor plan" that everybody seems to want but then realizes how intrusive it is!

So, yes anywhere water could possibly go it needs to be protected, if that is the possibility of the entire room, then it needs to be protected!

Anything that would be used for a shower, I have used Prove membrane.

Nice thing about that, it can go up over drywall so no need for cement board!

Membrane goes between the plywood and tile?
isn't it a bit soft for grouting tile onto?
If you put it under the plywood, then can't the plywood rot over time?
