I'm renting an apartment where the tile on the bathroom floor is extremely ugly and old. I've tried rug but I'm really not crazy about a wall to wall rug in the bathroom.. Does anyone know if there is a way to paint the tile and if so how?

Tile over concrete

I have just removed the old tile in front of my fireplace. Under the tile was some "crumbly" concrete. I removed all this, and what I am left with is a 1 1/2" depression, with a concrete slab at the bottom. Do I fill the depression with concrete and allow room at the top for hardibacker and tile? Do I bond the hardibacker to the concrete? Do I allow for expansion/contraction of the hardwood floor around the depression by leaving a air gap betweeen the "new" concrete and the hardwood floor? How does one deal with the tile to hardwood floor joint, where the tile butts up to the hardwood floor? Thanks, Lou Read More

Okay, here's the problem. I have a 12x32' den which at some time in the past was apparently an outside porch with a 4" concrete slab floor. This thing is covered in asbestos tile stuck down to the concrete. I would like to put down some sort of ceramic tile, not sure what yet, sort of leaning toward saltillo for a "rustic" look. If I succeed it's [i]sure[/i] going to be rustic as the concrete is also sloping and I'm not [i]about[/i] to try to level a 12x32 space! How am I going to get tile over that asbestos? Is thinset going to stick? Obviously I can't rough up the existing asbestos tiles. 1/4" backerboard? How would I attach [i]that[/i]? The floor is [i]mostly[/i] flat. Just sloping.
