modified thinset
I've got to tile my stepson's bath rm floor this week. I can't remember when/where you need modified thinset and where you don't. I know to set the cement board in thinset and then of course you use it to set the tiles. Do you use modified both places? unmodified is a good bit cheaper per bag. Is one bag enough or do I need to get 2? Small bath rm, less than 50 sq ft.

Personally I use modified for everything. It may be overkill with the extra strength but for a few $ more I'm ok with it.
Many years ago my first tile job was for a fireplace hearth and surround. I actually used 2part epoxy thinnest for that little bit of extra strength. I'll never do that again and I'm sure somebody had some choice words trying to remove that stuff.
