Question

Hi. I have torn out an old (70+ years) bathroom, and under the old tile floor there is cement between the joists. Also the old brass pipes leading to the sink are at a level slightly higher than the joists, which is probably why the cement not only went between the joists, but above them. I need to figure out how to level the floor/subfloor for the installation of a new tile floor. Also, apparently the old stall shower was replaced at one point with the low quality vinyl shower we just removed. There was NO subfloor whatsoever -- just joists -- under the vinyl shower, and I need to determine what kind of subfloor I should install to support a tile (floor and walls) shower in its place. I did read Michael Burne's excellent article on mortar bed shower floors (http://www.jlconline.com/jlc/archive/kitchen/mortarbed_showers/index.html) and will follow what appears to be great advice. My problems here are the leveling of the uneven cement subfloor and the lack of a subfloor under the shower area.

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Mark

It occurs to me that I might not have been entirely clear about the floor problem.

Should I level (however I can do it) the cement floor and then lay down cement board or plywood?

Should I put a wooden subfloor under the shower area and then add cementboard? Help!

Thanks

Mark

Smile floor leveling

The concrete can be leveled with a self leveling cement, IF the concrete is sound, clean and is actually concrete. Self levelers can be a little tricky, reccommend you have a pro do it. Done properly, it can be done in one day, walk on it 2-3 hours after pouring. New finished floor material can be installed after 24 hours nothing else is needed other than normal materials for a concrete floor.

This may sound like a mutual admiration society, but since Jim gave me a plug, I'll have to give him one. Jim Buckley is an expert on self-leveling cements -- he MAKES them.
