Is it possible to lay ceramic tiles over hardwood floors without putting a backerboard down? Could we just put screws into the hardwood to secure it. Has anyone ever tryed this without the tiles cracking??? I hate to think of tearing up the hardwood floor and if the board is put over top it causes a lot more work.

Beetle,

Individual planks make a very poor substrate for ceramic or stone floors. You really do need cement backer over the top.
