I have removed the old covering around the bathtub. While removing that covering I found mold behind the covering and on the surface of the green backerboard. I removed all mold, and treated all surfaces with a mold killer (industrial type) Problem is I no longer have the green finish on the backerboard. Can I cover with plaster of paris for a smooth finish, THEN waterproof that finish AND then start tiling?

Since you mention green finish, I think you're talking about green sheetrock (green board) and not backer board, which is made from cement.

You should either remove the green board and install cement backer board in its place, or install a moisture barrier over the sheetrock and double up with cement backer board on top the green board.

Then you'll be ready for tile.
