Question

I have laminate countertops in my kitchen they are faux butcherblock and are flat. I would like to pull off the backboard and I would like to install ceramic tiles over the laminate and as a backsplash. Any chance? Can I pull off the laminate covering and install ceramic over what is left?

Dyan,

It's customary to use 1/4 in. cement backer board over the laminate, and then install the tiles on that. The backsplash can be put right over the sheetrock (wallboard).

Do a search of this board. There's been quite a bit of discussion.

There is an article from Popular Mechanics web site:

That covers this. Basically I got it right: if the formica is in GOOD shape you can go right over it.

I covered my counter several years ago with this method and
it looks beautiful. I used a floor tile 12 x 12 marble look tile. Everyone loves it and I have helped two of my friends cover their counters.

GO FOR IT!
