I have an old house. I would like to tile the walls in the bathroom. However, the walls are in tough shape (plaster, with wainscoating on bottom). Would it be ok to cover the walls with three-eighths inch plywood (sanded on one side) and tile right to the plywood?

Plywood would be the worst choice for tile backing. Why not use 1/2 in. cement backer board? You can get it at Home Depot or any tile supply store.
