Kitchen Backsplash

My current backsplash area in my kitchen is painted plaster and lathe. Can I tile directly on top of this surface or do I need to put up plywood/drywall/ cement board?

Installing ceramic tile backsplash

Go to www.doityourself.com/ceramictile. You will find a list of helpful tips for wall tile.

If you could somehow remove the paint and get down to the actual plaster, you could tile right to it with thin set. I think, though, it might be easier to just install 1/4 in. backer board and then the tile.
