Tile on backsplash in kitchen

I have 5/16 wood paneling under the formica existing on the back splash in the kitchen. I am going to replace the formica with tile.
Should I cut the paneling out and replace this area with sheet rock and wonder board or could I go over the paneling with wonderboard or backerboard then with tile?

I'm not a pro but I've done many tile jobs, and about a half dozen back splashes. You could do it either way but it would be easier to go over the paneling with the cement board. Make sure you screw the board up good.

Installing ceramic backsplash

I have read forum posts where ceramic tile was installed over existing laminate backsplash. Go to www.doityourself.com/ceramic for helpful installation tips.
