ceramic tile on countertops

I have the regular cheap laminate countertops i want to put tile can i tile directly over the current countertop and can i use the same mortar as used on floors?

Your best bet is to apply the 1/4" wonderboard right on top of the counter. First trowel on thinset, then lay the board down in the thinset, Screw the board down every six inches or use 1/2" roofing nails. Tape your joints with thinset and fiberglass tape. Trowel on thinset and set your tiles. You will never have any problems...

Tiling over plastic laminate tops

Forum members report installing ceramic tile over plastic laminate countertops, but not the preformed tops with the rolled edge.
