"Painting" Bathroom Wall Tile?

Is it possible to "paint" ceramic wall tile? I know you can with tubs and I am curious to know if you can with tile. Any help would be much appreciated!

I have seen this done before, but it never looks good (in my opinion) and never holds up. I think the main problem is that glossy finish of the tile--paint simply can't adhere to it.

The tile that is in the bathroom of the Fifty-year-old house that I am renting is PEPTO-BISMOL PINk(:o ). It runs from the floor to three-quarters up the wall and I am interested in finding out what I can do to make this design disaster aesthetically pleasing. Decorating is neither my strong point or the point of this site, but I thought perhaps I could get some help here.
