Ceramic Tile Tub Surround

I have a tub with a cultured marble surround on the walls. I want to put up ceramic tile. Do I need to remove the cultured marble first and put up backerboard, or is it possible to lay the ceramic tile directly on the marble?

I would suggest that you remove the surround and put up green drywall.

I must disagree. Green drywall is no longer considered a propper substrate for tile in a wet area such as a shower. If I wanted to, I could support my family full-time by doing nothing but tearing out "sheetrock" showers and replacing them with something made out of cement.

Cement backer board, properly installed according to manufacturer's instructions is the way to go.

I have and old house but not a whole lot of money right now. My bathroom tile is a blue that i have not seen before it is light blue. Our kitchen tile is very light. It is an off white/bisque. It is very hard to keep clean as our garage entry comes right into the kitchen and we have a dog. We do not plan on staying here for too long so we do not want to spend money re-tiling or putting in hardwood floors. Does any one have any other inexpensive ideas/solutions? I was thinking of painting the floor. Maybe by rubbing some type of various brown, and terricota shades of paint or shoe polish and then trying to seal the floor somehow. I was wondering if anyone new if this is possible and if anyone has done this what kind paint and sealer did they use. Please respond.Read More
