Do I have to use backerboard?
Hi,
I'm getting ready to do my first installation of ceramic tile in my foyer. I pulled the vinyl flooring up and see that in addition to the 1" flooring, it has a 1/4" of luan board the vinyl was glued to. Do I still need to use backerboard for this or is this sufficient?
This 5x7 area is my test before I decide to my kitchen, dining, and sunroom as well, so all comments are appreciated!

Hi,
Luaun is a very poor substrate for ceramic tile. Pull it up and replace it with 1/4 in. cement backer board. Bed the board in thin set and nail it thoroughly. Tape the seams with thin set and fiberglass tape.
Yes, you have to.
