I recently purchased a house. The ceramic soap holder in the shower is attached to the tile and is broken and need replacing. How do I remove the holder from the tile????

Floor Tile inspection

What is the best method for test or inspecting the quality of a Ceramic Tile installation. Would tapping the tile for a solid sound be the best test?

Well that would locate any loose tile...but it doesn't give you any other information about the quality of the installation. Knowing the substate underneath and what was used for adhesives would help.

Floor prep question

Hello. I have a question on prepping a concrete floor for ceramic tile. The concrete is mostly bare but around the perimeter of the room i had sprayed the base boards with semi gloss paint and got quite a bit of overspray on the concrete about 6 inches out from the baseboards. Can i just add a bonding agent to the thinset or am i going to have to get up ALL the paint from the concrete first? Thanx for any input. Floor Prep - Alternatives to backerboard?

I just finished pulling up the 20+ year old tile in my kitchen. The old tile was laid directly onto plywood (I don't know the total thickness of subfloor, I am just assuming since it was strong enough to hold the old tile, it will be good enough for new tile) I am now in the surface prep stage and am running into a problem. The old tile was laid without an underlayment such as backerboard. Thus for me to use backerboard, I would have to increase the height of my floor. This is a problem at the threshold to the door outside because I don't have the skills to raise the threshold so that it would still seal if I cut the door to fit over new tile and backerboard. Is it neccessary to install backerboard, or can I install onto the same plywood the old tile was installed on. If so, how should I prepare the plywood to received the new tile?
