Sand and Refinish Stone Floor???

I recently moved into a house that has a stone entry way. I believe it is something called "Tennessee River Stone." Anyway, the prior owners were less than careful when repainting, and there are paint splatters all over the floor. I have tried scraping, sanding and using Goof Off. The latter two methods get rid of the splatters, but they also seem to remove the finish on the floor. What other options are there? Can I sand the entire floor to remove all splatters and the finish, and then refinish? Would I use a sander like is used for hardwood floors? What products are used for finishing stone floors? Thanks.

I've seen marble floors professionally sanded and repolished, but I don't think that this will work for you. It sounds like you have more of a slate type floor. If that's the case, visit a home or tile center, see if you can find a slate refinishing kit.
