Marble Refinishing

I bought a fixer-upper their are 20 marble steps that have been worn down. The marble is white and over one inch thick. I would like to bring the shine back to it. I've done some tile work before but not this extensive. Can anyone help explain the prosses, or guid me to where I could find some info?

The background: I have tiles installed on a slab floor which has cracked causing the tiles to also crack. I need to replace the cracked tiles (some saltillo and some ceramic). The question: Is there something I can add to the thinset, or perhaps even some other mastic product I can use, that will allow the bond 'give' a little and prevent stress cracks in the future? Thanks for you help.

I have vinyl tiles that I want to replace with ceramic. The underlayment is cement. My question is do I need to strip the old adhesive that's on the cement before I apply the thin-set that I'm using?
