tile kitchen floor

I have a kitchen with grey ceramic tile. I am in the process of redecorating and wonder if it's possible to paint the tile? I'm thinking of a checker board pattern???

Is there any kind of method for cleaning and/or buffing a ceramic tile with real dirty grout? The floor hasn't been cleaned in years. Supposedly the floor has a sealer on it from when it was first put down?
