I am getting ready to paper a hallway which is a old plaster wall with several coats of paint. My husand says to size it first but I was told just to use paste and the pre-pasted paper. What does sizing actually do???

Sizing is a primer/sealer formulated for wallpaper. Site un-seen I am going to suggest sizing the walls, especially if it is a gloss paint you will be hanging over, beter safe than sorry. I will also suggest useing a strippable wallpaper adhesive as well, just in case you or someone else wants to take it off and repaint.

I have hung wallpaper over painted walls without sizing, but without seeing it, I am afraid to suggest it and sizing them will not hurt a thing.
