Hanging chalkboard liner - what to attach to?

I would like to hang this chalkboard liner to the outside of my pantry door, which measures 18"x80". The door is wood, but not solid (hollow), and is not a completely flat surface since the center panels are slightly recessed for decorative purposes.

I'm looking for a thin, strong, lightweight sheet that will cover the door and provide a solid backing to the chalkboard lining. Metals Depot priced out a sheet of aluminum 18"x80" (.032 inch width, weighs 4.5 pounds) for $88, but I'd like to know if there are cheaper DIY alternatives. Someone had suggested dryer vent metal, but that's too small. But something along those lines.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I would use a piece of hardboard, we always called it Masonite. It's heavier than aluminum but not heavy enough to cause any problem with the door.

Thanks - how would you suggest hanging/attaching the board to the door? It's a hollow door, not solid.
