My wife wants me to put up wallpaper on a single bedroom wall but our house has an orange peel texture on all the walls. The wallpaper is going in a nursery so i suspect it will only be up for a few years before we want to do something else, likely repaint the wall. I'm concerned skimcoating the textured wall and pasting up paper will set us up for a hassle and mess when we want to take the paper down.

So, I'm wondering: can I cover the wall by nailing up 1/8" hardboard and pasting the wallpaper over that? When we're ready to remove the paper and wallboard, we'll be left with a clean textured wall that can be used as-is or repainted. Does that make sense or is there a reason this wouldn't work well? I'd appreciate a reality check.
