Unhappy Lots of drywall patches to hide

We just bought a 50 year old home that needs lots of sheetrock repairs. It looks as though feet have come through the ceiling in several places through the years. It also appears that former owners filled nail holes in the drywall with a trowel leaving unsightly large patches througout the home.

I think that the easiest way to fix this would be to sand down the high points on the patches and re-texture everything. I've never done this before, but I can't imagine that it would be too hard.

Any comments or suggestions? Is there an easier fix?

Thanks!

Yes on sanding down the high points, repatching and sanding again. I'm not sure what you mean by footprints....actual holes in the ceiling or just more spackle spots? If it's spackle spots and they are smooth I would suggest another coat or two of paint. I might go with one coat of latex interior wall-primer followed by a finish coat of latex interior paint - flat. That should hide them.
