popcorn walls

I have just purchased a home that I want to do some improvements on, some major, some minor. The first thing I want to tackle is all these white walls and ceilings with the popcorn plaster texturing. Should I attempt to texture plaster over the existing plaster or do I need to remove all the old stuff? The under lying surface is sheet rock. Maybe I can just knock most of the old down and cover with new?? I'd like to wallpaper in some areas and I assume the only way to do that is to remove ALL the old and sand smooth (what a JOB!). Is there an easy way to do that?? Will the wallpaper stick on these walls after I remove the surface plaster?? HELP!

If this is a plaster texture on a plaster wall/ceiling, your chances of scraping the texture off and having a relatively smooth surface are pretty much zero. The only way I know of is to knock (or lighty scrape) as much loose texture off, and then putty coat the entire area smooth. Once smooth you can texture or seal and wallpaper.

Good Luck!!!!
