popcorn walls

I have just purchased a home that I want to do some improvements on, some major, some minor. The first thing I want to tackle is all these white walls and ceilings with the popcorn plaster texturing. Should I attempt to texture plaster over the existing plaster or do I need to remove all the old stuff? The under lying surface is sheet rock. Maybe I can just knock most of the old down and cover with new?? I'd like to wallpaper in some areas and I assume the only way to do that is to remove ALL the old and sand smooth (what a JOB!). Is there an easy way to do that?? Will the wallpaper stick on these walls after I remove the surface plaster?? HELP!

If this is a plaster texture on a plaster wall/ceiling, your chances of scraping the texture off and having a relatively smooth surface are pretty much zero. The only way I know of is to knock (or lighty scrape) as much loose texture off, and then putty coat the entire area smooth. Once smooth you can texture or seal and wallpaper.
