a 14' load bearing wall will have to be braced with at least 1 tempory wall before you remove it. then it will have to be replaced with a beam. everything i have read says get an engineer to figure how big a beam you will need and where the beam supports should be. at the very least i would consult a professional carpenter before you start. this isn't that tough a job to do but you do have to do it right. i replaced a 16' load bearing wall and had to replace it 4- 11 3/4" x 1 1/2" ganglams. these had to be nailed, not screwed together. end supports had to be 5 - 2x4's in the end wall (also nailed together) and 4-2x8's in the room. that column had to be nailed together and supported in the basement also. engineer cost about $500 but that is money well spent if the job had been done wrong.
good luck!
