Insulating Garage

I'd like to take down the current cement (plaster) walls in my garage and replace with sheetrock (for several reasons - to put in insulation, the current wall are in bad shape, etc, etc.)

Anyway, my concern is that this material contains asbestos. Behind this material is a thin metal sheet. The house was built in 1953 and I'm assuming they used this stuff because it's fire resistant.

Does anyone have an idea as to whether or not this contains asbestos?

The only way to tell if the plaster on garage walls contains asbestos is to have it tested. Perhaps a quicker, less expensive and less messy option, would be to fir the walls and use insulating board. Go to www.doityourself.com/insulate to learn more about insulation and to calculate the R-value for your ZIP.
