Big Hole in Wall

I just had a new shower facuet put in my shower. The pic shows the hole that I'm left with.

In order to fix this, here's what I am thinking.

1. Glue two 1x2 strips of wood inside the hole.

2. Screw a patch board to the strips.

3. Replace the tile.

Is this feasible. I can't screw the strips to the existing wall because of the tile. What type of adhesive would be best for this? I need to to hold literally forever, because the patch piece will not be joined to this existing wall other than the grout for the tile.

Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions and ideas that you may have.

Bill

glue alone wont be enough. get some tile off in order to get some screws into strips. if you can get full tiles off they should fall right back in place w proper adhesive
