Hanging - Vertical or Hortizontal

I'm finishing my basement and was told that it is best to hang drywall vertically when you are not drywalling the ceiling. Is this right?

The issue has to do with the number of seams to finish. Hanging sheetrock horizontally reduces the number of seams by enabling the use of 12 long sheetrock to cover 8 foot walls. For the individual, trying to put 12 foot sheetrock on the upper level without a sheetrock jack is challenging. To say nothing of trying to move a sheet by yourself.
