Question No more Popcorn on ceiling

Trying to redo the family room on the first floor. It used to be a family room with an attatched garage but now the garage has been enclosed as part of the house making one large room. The ceiling over the post-garage side is the traditional flat swirl ceiling yet the ceiling over the origional family room is the popcorn type. Is there an easy way to remove the popcorn from the ceiling without replacing it? I thought sanding, but that would be a lot of work, is there an easier way?

You can dampen it by misting with a spray bottle of water, scrape off the popcorn with a putty knife. When most is gone, let it dry and sand it smooth enough to do whatever you want.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tom & welcome to the forums. Mist it down & then scrape it. I'd use at least a 12" mud knife, wider path, less scraping than with a putty knife. Still alot of work, but beats sanding hands down. Good luck.
