Vinyl siding

Im not sure if this is the right section, but my question is what is the corrct way of installing vinyl siding? Every now and then we get some strong winds, about once a yr it blows of sections on my siding. I have what seems to be about 1 1/2" of blue styrofoam board, with the siding attached to it with roofing nails not much bigger then the 1 1/2" so my siding really flexes and you can see nails coming loose everywhere. I am contemplating taking it down and reinstalling it correctly. In some areas its buldged out a good inch or two, and that really sticks out on a straight wall. any info would be greatly appreciated!
