Question removing plaster designs on ceiling

My wife and I are in the process of buying our first house. The house needs some work, and one of the things we want to get rid of is the swoops and swirl designs in the plaster on the ceiling.

Our question is, can we just sand down the ceiling? Would we then need to re-plaster ? We have a month to work on it before we have to move in - so we don't mind making a mess of things - as long as it is a viable option. Thanks. Bill

Are we talking about a textured drywall ceiling or is this old fashioned plaster?

removing plaster designs on ceiling

if its not a real deep swirl Sanding it down with very course sand paper (to start with) and finnishing it off with 120 or 150 may not be as difficult as it sounds but will be dusty and tiring. redrywalling may be best unless you've got experience with plastering.
