ceiling repair

I removed our fireplace and am in the process of repairing the hole in the roof where the chimney was. After hanging the sheetrock to cover the exposed roof beams, should I use sheetrock tape over the gaps or just fill it in with mud?

thanks.

Use tape to bridge the seams in the sheetrock to keep it from cracking. The self-sticking mesh tape is convenient because you can skip the step where you bed the tape.

Here's some info on drywall and taping and repair.

if the gaps are wide ie: 1/8" fill with mud let dry then bed paper tape in fresh mud and squeeze out excess apply two more coats of mud to finnish.
