Repairing water damage in ceiling corner

I need to repair a corner in bedroom where water has leaked and caused the sheetrock to bubble (4"x2" in size). Is it better to cut out the bubble and repair it with a piece of small piece of sheet rock or just cover with mud and sand?

If the sheetrock has swollen from the water and become brittle, it would be best to remove and replace it. If the tape has simply separated from the sheetrock, just remove and replace the tape and the mud.
