Cement board under tub surround?

Cement board under tub surround?
I just had a bathroom roughed in and my walls are plaster over brick next to the tub. I'm planning on installing a vinyl tub surround and I wanted to find out if I could/should attach it directly to plaster or if I should install cement board or regular drywall first and then the surround.

You can attach it to what you have but the flange will stick out . So you will have to hang some drywall around the top and sides then do some sort of moulding (L or J metal) around the sides for a nice finished look.
