Question hanging space

What is a maximum gap for tape spans? My wall span measures from ceiling joists to top of sole plate at 96.75 inches. I assume ceiling sheetrock first (1/2") which leaves my two horizontal wall sheets still 1/4" inch from sole plate. I want to catch this plate right? How much and then back to first question (a gap at top to tape and mud).

Use a kicker to push the drwall up and flush from the ceiling down. The gap at the plate will either be covered by the finish flooring or at least the base molding.

So you are saying that you will have 1 3/4" from the bottom of your rock to the floor? If that is true you can put a strip that wide at the bottom. Don't worry about taping it cause it will be covered by your base. Assuming you have base.

Thank you bungalow jeff and coops28, this makes perfect sense. I have since found some helpful articles in Fine Homebuilding though I didn't find specific mention of gaps at bottom.
