My home was built in 1970 and has raised lines that look like wallpaper seams every 18 inches across. There is no wallpaper underneath the paint as I thought. What are these and how can I correct them before I paint?

This sounds similar to what we found in our bedroom of our older home. The seams of wall board weren't done properly. We just had our wall seams redone. Two applications of mud and sanding inbetween those applications, you cant tell where the seams were. I'm ready to starting painting the room tomorrow!

Call a sheetrock taper, and get it retaped and mudded. Not expensive. Your walls will be in great shape very soon. This usually occurs when the sheetrock was originally taped and it was not warm enough. supposed to be 70 degrees in any room taping occurs.
Good Luck
