partiotion wall frame, how tight

how tightly should a partition wall frame fit into the existing ceiling joist?

should you have to use a mallet to get the wall to fit into the slot, or that's applying too much force and could potentionaly damage something.

If it is in place, plumb, and square you should be alright.

is there any danger in fitting the wall against the ceiling joists too tightly?

is there anything you can use besides a saw to trim the 2x4s, its such a small fraction that needs to be removed, would sanding work?

You do not want to fit a partition wall tight because it will act as a new support to the joist above and try to distribute additional load to the framing below. Cut the studs shy and nail with shims.
