Water marks on the ceiling

Hey how's it going.?
The shingles above our garage are popping up and (as you may have guessed) rain water has dripped on to the ceiling below and has made a mark. It has also cracked the drywall.
My question is, Does the drywall need replaced or is it possible to have it repaired? If so, how do I repair the ceiling? And, how do I remove the water mark?

If the paper is coming off the drywall, it will need to be replaced. You could cut out the bad section, put in a new piece and patch the seams with drywall mud and tape. If you have a textured ceiling, it might be difficule to match the texture up.

If its not sagging, crumbling or the paper coming off, I would paint the watermark with 1-2 coats of alkyd based primer and then paint the ceiling with ceiling paint. This is a lot easier and will probably work.

Fix the shingles first!

The alkyd primer will work, but I prefer to use Kilz oil based primer/stain blocker. Then two coats of paint.
