I'm enlarging a closet and am installing a new wall. Trouble is the wall will not be aligned with a joist and I have a flat roofed home and very little room for hammering.

Can I use screws? If yes, which type and size?

Sure you can. I would recommend using 2 1/2" or 3" drywall screws or yellow zinc decking screws.
