How to fix (stabilize) a cracked ceiling joist?

I've just discovered a crack in one of my ceiling joists. It starts from the bottom of the joist and extends half way towards the top. Since the crack is near the middle of the span I think I would better fix it before I install the drywall. Anyone knows how to fix or stabilize it? Thanks in advance.

You could sister a similarly sized piece of wood 10 feet long to it, using 16d nails or 3" wood screws with construction adhesive and a double row of nails or screws on 6" centers.

agree but ensure that the joist isnt saging by wedging a 2x4 or 2x6 between it and the floor to lift any sagging and making it level with the adjacent members. Then fasten 2x's on either side of the joist.

I am getting ready to finish about 800 sq ft of ceiling. I plan on using a med texture and would like to add ceiling white paint. 1. should i prime before texture. 2. I am doing orange peel walls, should i do them first so its easier to tape off the walls then the textured ceilings? 3. what is the ratio of water (or paint) to dry for the ceilings and the orange peel? 4. should i prime the walls before the opeel? 5. how forgiving is the taping etc for orange peel texture ?
