Settling Crack?
#1
When I moved into my 40 year old split-level house about 7 months ago, the inspector said a crack in the dining room ceiling was a settling crack. I had the crack plastered and all was well until recently, when the crack reappeared. Is it possible that the house is still settling? Is there anything that can be don to remedy the problem and the cause?
Thanks,

hanemen3,
Your house is probably not still settling, but you can never rule that out. Your house is probably reacting to the change in weather and indoor humidity caused by running the furnace. This will usually lower the humidity causing the stick framing to shrink. Not much, but enough for cracks to appear.
Is your house truely plaster? At 40 years it is probably drywall. Need to know that before your questions can be answered.
