when to re-paint over mold

We recently had problems with my daughter's bedroom ceiling leaking. The roof has been replaced, but her bedroom ceiling now has some mold and/or mildew stains. I have used a bleach solution to clean up the stains, my question is how long should I wait before re-painting the ceiling? And how can I be sure that the bleach worked and the mold will not return. Thanks for your help.

If the bleach solution turned the mildew a light, tan color, it is dead. The mildew will return when the water returns. With any luck there will never be another leak. When the sheetrock is dry, you can paint.

Covering the stain is two-fold, sealing in the water mark and sealing in the stain itself. For a small area, I would buy a spray can of Kilz and spray it. It may take two or three thin coats to seal it well. Thin coats work better than a thick coat that does not dry properly. Then paint over the area with the appropriate paint for the room.

Hope this helps.
