Old lathe as furring strips?

I have taken out an old damaged plaster ceiling and noticed that I am going to need some furring strips on all of the joists to offset a new cieling to meet flush with the plaster level of the adjacent walls.

Can i recycle the old lathe strips and use them as furring strips to do this or am i asking for trouble? Should I buy new strips?

Thanks!

Now you know why you don't remove the lath.

Using the old lath for furring sounds like a good recycling idea.
