Angry Where do the studs hide??

This is going to sound sooooooo dense....I am trying to mount a shelf that is 58" long. Its kind of laaike a ladder turned sideways. The brackets (4) would be 12 and 1/2 inches apart. The problem is I can't find the studs! I can find one at the very beginning of the wall, but unless my house is put together with only that one, I'm, doing something wrong. I do have a stud sensor but we don't seem to get along. Please...can anybody help??
Thanks

They are either 16 inches or 24 inches apart. If you have drywall you can find them my measuring and rapping with your knuckles. If you have plaster walls the stud sensors get confused by wire mesh and the overall thickness. Measure and drill small holes till you find them.
